Historical Background:
Settlement: Presumed to have been established over a hundred years ago by Pho Ui Pa Kingkaew and his group who migrated from Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province.
Origin of the Name: "Mae" means river, and "Kampong" comes from the local yellow-red flowers that grow along the stream banks.
Traditional Way of Life: Villagers have a close connection with the forest, and their main occupation is cultivating miang (fermented tea leaves). Later, they started growing coffee and tea gardens under the Royal Project.
Development into a Tourist Destination: In 2000, the village opened as an ecotourism destination, focusing on homestay tourism and community-based management.
Highlights: It has a cool climate throughout the year, cold in winter, and is unique for its wooden houses lined up along the stream.
Currently, Mae Kampong is a highly popular nature-based tourist destination, while still maintaining its traditional way of life and Lanna indigenous culture.

The San Kamphaeng Hot Spring is a geyser-type hot spring, where underground water is heated by molten rock at high temperatures. This heat causes the water to rise drastically, eventually forcing it through cracks in the rock and erupting as a hot spring. The height of the eruption depends on the temperature of the water.
